Tragedy struck in Jigawa State last Thursday night when a petrol tanker explosion claimed over 100 lives in Majiya town, Taura Local Government Area.
In response, Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, has urged the Nigerian government to consider transporting fuel via rail across the country.
Atiku expressed his condolences on X, saying, “I am saddened by reports of the death of scores of people in a petrol tanker explosion in Majiya town in Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State. The incident in Jigawa is one too many involving tragic petrol tanker explosions in the country. It is about time we explored other means, like rail, for transporting petroleum products around the country. It is also pertinent to train drivers involved in the transportation of flammable products and review the protocol for the transportation of petroleum products and other inflammable products.”
Nigeria’s rail network, which spans over 3,505 km, has been undergoing rehabilitation since 2009. The government plans to extend the standard gauge to replace most of the Western Line, while the Eastern Line will be rehabilitated as a Cape gauge line. This development could potentially support Atiku’s proposal.
*Rail Transport: A Viable Alternative?*
– _Existing Infrastructure_: Nigeria’s rail network covers 3,505 km, with 669 km of standard gauge.
– _Ongoing Projects_: The Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge Railway, Warri-Itakpe Railway, and Lagos-Ibadan section are underway ¹.
– _Benefits_: Rail transport can reduce accidents, improve safety, and increase efficiency.
Atiku further emphasized, “I wish to share my grief with the people and government of Jigawa State and ask for an expeditious rescue and control operation. No resource should be spared in treating the injured. I also sympathize with families that have lost dear ones to this tragic incident and pray that they be comforted and that the deceased find eternal rest. -AA”
