In the wake of the just-concluded Rivers State Local Government Area elections, Labour Party chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo has emphasized the need for politicians to stand up for their constituents, even in the face of adversity.
Okonkwo, a former LP campaign spokesperson, praised Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his unwavering commitment to the people’s rights and his determination to ensure the elections took place despite significant obstacles.
Okonkwo commended Fubara’s resolve to proceed with the elections, despite the Nigeria Police Force’s pull-out and pushback from supporters of Minister Nyesom Wike. “If you’re not willing to take the risk that is attached to any profession, step aside so that people who God gives that mind will go ahead and serve God in that capacity,” Okonkwo stated. He added that politicians like Fubara, who resist and protest when their rights are trampled upon, are essential to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
Okonkwo emphasized that politicians must be willing to take risks and stand up for their people, even if it means facing personal danger. “If you’re a politician and you can’t stand for the people who voted for you, and because you don’t want to die, step aside. Because that’s what the job entails.” He expressed admiration for Fubara’s courage, saying, “I’m looking for leaders who would say, ‘nobody will rig my election, and if you rig my election, I will fight, and let us come out and fight'”.
The Rivers State Local Government Area elections were marked by controversy, with Fubara’s administration facing opposition from Wike’s supporters. However, Fubara’s determination to ensure the elections took place has earned him praise from various quarters, including Okonkwo and a former army chief. As the state moves forward, the need for courageous leadership and commitment to the people’s rights remains paramount.
