A High Court in the Federal Capital Territory has taken a significant step in ensuring that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, faces justice.
Justice Maryanne Anenih issued a public summons against Bello, ordering him to appear in court on October 24 to answer to a 16-count charge of criminal breach of trust to the tune of N110.4 billion.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had previously been unable to serve Bello with the charge, filed on September 24, prompting the court’s action. Bello’s absence stalled the arraignment initially scheduled for Thursday.
*Case Details*
– _Charges_: 16-count charge of criminal breach of trust
– _Amount Involved_: N110.4 billion
– _Co-defendants_: Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu
– _Arraignment Date_: October 24
The EFCC has been ordered to publish the public summons in a widely circulating newspaper and paste copies at Bello’s last known address and in conspicuous places in the court premises.
This development is the latest in the EFCC’s efforts to prosecute Bello, who has previously been accused of money laundering to the tune of N80.2 billion. The court’s insistence on Bello’s appearance is a clear indication that the justice system will not tolerate evasion or immunity ³.
