A fierce gun battle is currently raging between personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia, and unidentified gunmen in Mbata, Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, Abia State.
The clash began around 6 a.m. when over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored personnel carriers arrived at Umuchima village, targeting suspected gunmen.
According to reports, the gunmen were camped near a river that marks the boundary between Abia and the Mbaise axis of Imo State. Soldiers have taken control of key junctions leading in and out of the village, while others engage the gunmen in nearby bushes. The sound of gunfire has persisted, with no official statements from the Nigerian Army or the Abia State Government.
The development may be connected to Governor Alex Otti’s recent pledge to enhance security following a meeting with top security officials. The governor’s commitment to improving security in the state may have prompted the military to launch an operation against the suspected gunmen.
As the situation continues to unfold, residents of Umuchima village and surrounding areas are advised to remain indoors and avoid any areas where gunfire is being exchanged. The Nigerian Army and other security agencies are urged to ensure that the situation is brought under control as soon as possible to prevent any further loss of life or property.
