Manchester City’s reign as Premier League champions is under threat after a dismal 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
The defeat marked the team’s fifth consecutive loss in all competitions and third straight league game without a win.
The pressure is mounting on manager Pep Guardiola, who acknowledged that a loss to Liverpool next weekend could be catastrophic for their title hopes. With Liverpool potentially going eight points clear if they defeat Southampton on Sunday, Guardiola was asked if an 11-point gap would be too much to overcome.
“Yeah, it’s true,” Guardiola replied. “We’re not thinking about winning or losing [the title], we are not in the situation to think about what is going to happen at the end of the season. If in the end we don’t win it’s because we don’t deserve it. We won it in the past because we deserved it.”
The Spaniard’s comments suggest that Manchester City’s title defense is on shaky ground, and the team’s fate may be sealed if they fail to secure a win against Liverpool next weekend.
