The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the Ondo State governorship election held on Saturday, describing it as the worst conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement released on Sunday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, announced that the PDP would conduct a thorough review of the election and its outcome.
According to Ologunagba, the election fell short of expectations and requirements for a free, fair, and credible election. He alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) engaged in widespread election merchandising, monetization, and vote buying to suppress the genuine aspirations of the people.
“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP will be having a more detailed review of the election and its outcome and take appropriate action in the defence of our democracy,” Ologunagba stated. “This election witnessed widespread election merchandising, monetisation and barefaced vote buying by the APC and its apparatus in government to suppress the genuine aspiration of the people. We demand that serious action be taken to stem such if Nigeria’s democracy must survive.”
The PDP has called on Nigerians and the international community to take note of the alleged electoral irregularities. The party’s review of the election is expected to shed more light on the circumstances surrounding the poll. As the PDP prepares to take “appropriate action,” the nation waits with bated breath to see how events will unfold.
