Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Sunday, marking Modi’s first official visit to the country and the West African region.
This historic visit comes 17 years after the last Indian prime minister visited Nigeria.
President Tinubu expressed eagerness to host Modi, stating their discussions aim to expand strategic partnerships and enhance cooperation in key sectors. “Look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his first visit to Nigeria… Our bilateral discussions will seek to expand the strategic partnership between both countries and enhance cooperation in critical sectors. Welcome to Nigeria, PM Modi,” Tinubu posted on X.
Modi was warmly received by Minister for Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who presented him with the Key to the City of Abuja. This symbolizes the trust and honor bestowed upon Modi by the Nigerian people. Modi thanked President Tinubu, saying, “Landed a short while ago in Nigeria. Grateful for the warm welcome. May this visit deepen the bilateral friendship between our nations”.
Modi’s five-day visit includes stops in Brazil for the 19th G20 Summit and Guyana, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Guyana in over 50 years. His trip underscores India’s commitment to strengthening global partnerships.
