The National Military Cemetery in Abuja was filled with emotions as family, colleagues, and dignitaries gathered to bid farewell to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, on Friday.
The ceremony, attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other top government officials, was a testament to Lagbaja’s dedication to the nation.
In his remarks, Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, praised Lagbaja’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty and security. Musa noted that Lagbaja’s tenure was marked by bold actions against insurgency, banditry, and other threats, significantly enhancing the Nigerian Army’s operational readiness and morale. “He was a man of profound faith, kindness, and humility,” Musa said. “We will not leave you alone. We know your loss is immeasurable, but please take solace in knowing that he lived a life of purpose and left behind a legacy that will never fade.”
President Tinubu conferred a posthumous national honor, Commander of the Federal Republic, on Lagbaja, describing him as “a true soldier, a general, and officer who symbolized the best of his profession.” Tinubu praised Lagbaja’s commitment to the nation, saying, “He was more than I could have hoped for. He was one of my best appointments.” The President also highlighted Lagbaja’s role as a trusted advisor, noting his “uncommon valor in the charge of his duty and the administration of the rank and file.”
Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru, echoed the President’s sentiments, saying Lagbaja embodied the core values of soldiering and served Nigeria without reservation for over 30 years. The late army chief’s widow, Mariya, was visibly emotional during the ceremony, her tears a testament to the profound impact of Lagbaja’s passing. As the nation bids farewell to a fallen hero, his legacy will continue to inspire the military and Nigerians alike.
