The National Examinations Council (NECO) has announced the completion of payment of allowances to all 72,138 examiners engaged as ad hoc staff for the 2024 School-Based Senior School Certificate Examination.
This development comes after weeks of protests and threats from examiners who claimed they had not received their entitlements.
According to Azeez Sani, NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, payments began on October 4, 2024, on a bank-by-bank basis to facilitate easier reconciliation and a smoother payment process. Initially, some examiners provided incorrect bank details, which have since been rectified, and payments have now been cleared with all 24 banks involved ¹.
NECO has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it deliberately withheld payment to examiners engaged for the 2024 SSCE. “The Management advises that any individual engaged by the Council should seek clarification directly from NECO on matters that concern them before resorting to the media,” the statement read.
The Council has reaffirmed its appreciation for its examiners and other ad hoc staff, stressing that it values their contributions to the successful conduct of its examinations and will not overlook their entitlements.
This resolution brings relief to the examiners who had threatened to embark on a nationwide protest over the non-payment of their allowances. With the payment issues resolved, NECO can now focus on conducting successful examinations.
