In a significant development, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has been elected as the new National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The election, which took place at the Union’s Zonal Secretariat along the Osogbo/Ikirun road, saw Akinsanya emerge as the sole candidate.
As the former Chairman of the NURTW Lagos State Chapter, Akinsanya brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His election was monitored and observed by the acting National President, Aliyu Issa-Ore, who emphasized that the Union’s Constitution stipulates that the zone permitted to fill the national president’s position would elect its preferred candidate and present them to the national body.
Mrs Adedamola Salam, Head of Finance at the National Headquarters in Abuja, represented the acting NURTW President and noted that “The Southwest zone has fully complied with the Constitution in electing Oluomo as President”. This endorsement reinforces Akinsanya’s legitimacy as the new National President.
The delegates also elected Tajudeen Agbede as Vice President, Southwest, and Akeem Adeosun as Trustee from the Zone. These appointments are expected to strengthen the Union’s leadership and facilitate a smoother transition.
Shortly after taking the oath of office, Akinsanya called for peace and pledged to work towards unity among members. “I have forgiven everyone who has offended me, and I hope those I have offended will forgive me as well. This is our union, and we must be committed to preserving it. We will not allow anyone to destroy our means of livelihood”. This message of unity and reconciliation sets the tone for his presidency.
As Akinsanya begins his tenure, all eyes are on him to address the challenges facing the transport sector and promote harmony within the Union.
