The Plateau State Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has wrapped up its ember months safety campaign, tagged “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers Than Drivers.”
The campaign, which kicked off on November 6, 2024, in Jos, aimed to reduce road accidents during the peak travel season.
*Campaign Highlights*
– Press briefing and town hall meeting to sensitize the public
– Distribution of fliers and motorcade carnival to raise awareness
– Call to action for travellers to report reckless driving
Sector Commander Maxwell Plateau emphasized the need for behavioural change among drivers, stressing that passengers have the right to a safe drive. “We must appreciate the selfless services the transport subsector in the country ensures that the movement of people, goods, and services get to their destinations safely,” he said. “However, we must be deliberate in playing our role to maximize safety.”
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang commended the FRSC for its efforts to reduce road traffic crashes and assured that positive changes would soon be made to the state’s roads.
Yakubu Dalyop, state chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, pledged the union’s support for road safety efforts. “No vehicle will be allowed to carry overload. All passengers must complete the passenger manifest,” he said.
The FRSC urged travellers to report reckless driving and adhere to road safety guidelines. “By reporting reckless driving and adhering to road safety guidelines, travellers can contribute to a safer ember month period. Remember, safe arrival is everyone’s responsibility,” Maxwell Plateau said.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with road safety challenges, the Plateau State FRSC’s campaign serves as a reminder of the importance of collective responsibility in ensuring safe roads.
