The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has raised an alarm over an alleged plot by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to utilize operatives of the Amotekun Corps in the upcoming November 16 governorship election.
The PDP’s concern stems from the appointment of Amotekun Corps Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, as Chairman of the APC campaign council’s Security Committee. Ayo Fadaka, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the PDP governorship candidate, described this development as a ploy to deploy Amotekun operatives as thugs during the poll.
According to Fadaka, “We take serious cognisance of actions the APC continues to take with a view to criminally compromise the November 16th election. These sundry actions, which began weeks ago, are beginning to crystallise.” The PDP also claimed knowledge of APC plans to cause security scares in select local governments.
The APC swiftly denied these allegations, emphasizing that Adeleye was never appointed to any campaign council committee. Steve Otaloro, APC Director of Media and Publicity, stated, “The Amotekun Corps is a professional body dedicated to protecting the people, not engaging in politics.” Otaloro urged security agencies to investigate the PDP’s claims.
This war of words escalates tensions ahead of the Ondo governorship election. The PDP vowed to resist the alleged plot, while the APC dismissed the claims as baseless and distracting.
