The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have declared an indefinite strike, starting tonight, October 27, 2024.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in universities is coordinating the nationwide action.
The strike is in protest of the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries, dating back to when they joined the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) industrial action during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s approval for 50% of the withheld salaries to be paid, the Minister of Finance’s inaction has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to resolving the issue.
Initially scheduled for October 23, the strike was rescheduled to allow for the Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches, held at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on October 23-24. The JAC leadership decided to move the strike’s effective date to midnight of October 27, 2024, to ensure effective coordination and unity among both unions.
In a circular titled “Latest development in respect of the withheld four (4) months salaries,” JAC expressed doubts about the government’s sincerity in addressing their concerns. “It is on record that the JAC of NASU and SSANU has issued multiple notices to the government to redress this ugly situation. However, the sincerity of the government to our cause is in doubt”.
The union leaders appreciate their members’ steadfast commitment and affirm their determination to persist in the struggle until ultimate victory is secured. The strike is expected to affect university operations nationwide, pending resolution of the salary dispute.
