A disturbing trend of clergy kidnappings continues in Anambra State, as Ven. David Arinze Ajaefobi, Archdeacon of Oyi Central Archdeaconry and Vicar of St James’ Parish, Awkuzu, has been reportedly kidnapped.
The abduction occurred on Saturday night, October 26, 2024, at the entrance gate of St James’ Parish, Awkuzu, in Oyi Local Government Area.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened around 9:00 PM, and the kidnappers remain unidentified. No ransom demands or communication have been made to the priest’s relatives, leaving the family and community in distress.
The church has announced prayer sessions for Ven. Ajaefobi’s safe release, as concerns grow about the increasing number of clergy kidnappings in the state. This incident follows previous kidnappings of Catholic priests in Anambra, including Rev. Father Christian Ike and Rev. James Achugbu.
When contacted, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer of Anambra State Police Command, stated that the police had not received any report of the incident. However, it’s worth noting that the police have successfully rescued kidnapped victims in the past, including six Lagos sports journalists abducted in Anambra.
The community remains on edge, awaiting updates on Ven. Ajaefobi’s situation and hoping for his safe return.
