A daring robbery attempt in Anambra, Awka took an unexpected turn on Sunday morning when security operatives gunned down one member of a three-man gang.
The incident occurred around 6 a.m. as residents were heading to church.
A victim, who wished to remain anonymous, recounted the harrowing experience. “I was coming back from work, and another girl who was going to church just came out of their lodge gate when the three men approached us and started asking what we had in our bags.”
The robbers stole her phone and other items, but their getaway was thwarted when the girl going to church quickly flung her bag into the bush and ran. The victim explained, “The girl who was going to church saw them and flung her bag into the bush. They searched my bag, saw my phone and money, and took them. Then the other girl started running into her lodge, while I ran towards the bush.”
As the victim hid in the bush, one of the robbers pursued her. However, a local security guard intervened, shooting and killing the robber. The other two gang members fled the scene.
The corpse of the slain robber remained at the scene at the time of filing this report. The swift response of the security guard prevented further harm to the victims and sent a strong message to potential criminals in the area.
This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and effective security measures in combating crime.
