A devastating act of vandalism has plunged parts of Kano and Kaduna states into darkness, as two major electricity towers belonging to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) were destroyed.
The affected towers, T133 and T136, are located along the 330-kilovolt Shiroro-Kaduna lines 1 and 2.
According to Ndidi Mbah, spokesperson for TCN, the company is working tirelessly to restore power to the region. “Arrangements are in top gear to deploy the newly procured ’emergency restoration system’ to the site, pending the reconstruction of the damaged towers,” Mbah stated. Interim measures have been put in place to supply bulk power to the Kaduna and Kano regions via the 330kV Kaduna – Jos transmission line.
The vandalism of the Shiroro – Kaduna 330kV lines 1&2 poses a significant challenge to bulk power transmission in the North West region, as each line is capable of carrying 600MW. TCN has conducted an aerial survey in collaboration with security operatives to assess the damage and potential threats.
– TCN engineers have implemented temporary measures to supply bulk power to the affected regions.
– The company is working to deploy an emergency restoration system to the site.
– Reconstruction of the damaged towers and restringing of transmission lines are underway.
– The vandalism has caused widespread blackouts in Kano and Kaduna states.
