Nigeria’s national grid collapsed again on Saturday, October 19, 2024, leaving millions without power.
This marks the third grid failure in just one week, following previous collapses on Monday and Tuesday.
The latest outage occurred at 8:16 a.m. Saturday, with power generation plummeting from 3,042 megawatts at 8 a.m. to a mere 47MW by 9 a.m.
The national grid is a complex network of power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. A collapse occurs when the entire transmission system fails, causing widespread electricity outages. This can happen due to technical faults, insufficient generation, transmission challenges, or overloading of the grid.
The frequent grid collapses have left Nigerians frustrated and concerned about the country’s power sector. The outages affect homes, businesses, and essential services, disrupting daily life and economic activities.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is working to restore power, but the cause of the collapse remains unknown. Allocation to power distribution companies stood at 0.00MW at the time of filing this report.
Experts and stakeholders are calling for infrastructure improvements and diversification of energy sources to address the challenges in Nigeria’s power sector. The frequent grid collapses highlight the need for urgent action to ensure reliable and sustainable electricity supply.
