A devastating tanker explosion in Majia Local Government Area of Jigawa State has claimed the lives of 153 people, with 100 others hospitalized and battling for survival.
The police spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the rising death toll, stating that the victims have been laid to rest in a mass grave.
The injured are currently receiving medical attention at various hospitals, including Aminu Kano, Jahun, Nguru, Hadejia, and Gumel. The hospitals are working around the clock to provide treatment to those affected.
Governor Mallam Umar Namadi has expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic incident, visiting the accident site and participating in the funeral prayer and mass burial of the deceased. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this painful time. We stand in solidarity with those who have lost loved ones and those injured in this tragic incident,” he said.
The state government has pledged to cover the medical expenses of those injured and provide necessary assistance to the affected families. Governor Namadi emphasized the importance of prioritizing safety during emergencies and avoiding gatherings at accident sites to prevent further tragedies.
According to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), 107 people have lost their lives, while 57 are hospitalized with severe burns. The agency continues to work with emergency responders to provide support and relief to those affected.
