The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) has alleged that Dangote Refinery operates a secretive petrol pricing regime, sparking concerns among marketers and consumers.
PETROAN President Billy Gillis-Harris, in an interview with Channels Television, emphasized the need for transparency. “Regarding Dangote price, as I speak to you this morning, I don’t know what Dangote price is all about… they have kept that shrouded in secrecy up until now.”
Gillis-Harris urged Dangote Refinery to open communication channels with stakeholders, ensuring business transparency. “We will encourage Dangote to open up the space of communication, talk to stakeholders, and get valuable inputs from everyone… there should be some level of business transparency.”
NNPC’s recent petrol price hike to N1,030 per liter in Abuja has further highlighted the issue. While Dangote Refinery discloses diesel prices, its petrol prices remain unknown. “I can tell you about their price for diesel… but in the case of the PMS, I don’t have any information,” Gillis-Harris noted.
However, economist Emmanuel Kelvin attributed the secrecy to the incomplete deregulation of petrol. Dangote Refinery’s silence on petrol pricing has sparked debate, with marketers and consumers seeking clarity.
The development comes as Nigerians face rising fuel costs, underscoring the need for transparency in the petroleum sector. PETROAN’s call for openness from Dangote Refinery has ignited discussions on the role of private refineries in Nigeria’s petroleum landscape.
