The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather alert, predicting thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across the country from Thursday to Saturday.
The agency’s weather outlook, released on Wednesday, warned of morning thunderstorms in the northern region on Thursday, affecting areas including Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna states.

– _Northern Region:_ Thunderstorms are expected in parts of Taraba State on Friday morning, with afternoon thunderstorms anticipated in Kaduna, Kebbi, Taraba, and Adamawa States.
– _North Central Region:_ Morning thunderstorms are forecasted in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa States on Friday, with widespread thunderstorms expected in the afternoon.
– _Southern Region:_ Thunderstorms are predicted in Abia, Imo, Enugu, Oyo, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom States during morning hours on Friday, with thunderstorms spreading to most parts of the region later in the day.
On Saturday, thunderstorms are expected in the morning hours in Taraba and Adamawa States, with afternoon thunderstorms forecasted in Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Taraba, and Adamawa States. The North Central Region will experience morning thunderstorms in the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kwara, Benue, and Nasarawa States.
NiMet warned of a high likelihood of urban flooding in major cities due to heavy downpours, advising residents to avoid flood-prone areas. Strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur. The agency urged the public to adhere to safety advisories issued by relevant authorities and advised airline operators to obtain updated weather reports and forecasts from NiMet for effective planning.
