Philip Ogunnaike, a 29-year-old suspected serial killer, has made a shocking plea to the authorities.
In an interrogation video obtained by newsmen, Ogunnaike begged to be sentenced to death alongside his accomplices.
The suspect, who was arrested in Ogun State, confessed to killing at least three young girls, including 18-year-old Akinsanya Habibat, 22-year-old Abigail Dina, and 23-year-old Mary Ogunyemi. His modus operandi involved luring victims into the forest, tying them up, strangling them, and abandoning their bodies after stealing their phones.
Investigations revealed that Ogunnaike had escaped from the Ibara Correctional Centre about two years ago while being taken to the Magistrate Court in Isabo for an ongoing armed robbery case. He claimed to have been initiated into the outlawed Eiye confraternity by one Danjuma and others.
“I don’t want anything other than the police to arrest Danjuma and others who initiated me into the Eiye cult,” Ogunnaike said. “If we get to court, they should not bother hearing our case, they should just go and kill us. But before they kill us, they should give me food so that I can eat before they kill me because those that I killed may just have finished eating before I killed them.”
The state Police Commissioner, Abiodun Alamutu, has launched a manhunt for Ogunnaike’s accomplices. The police are working to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
This development comes as the country debates the proposed death penalty for drug traffickers and other related crimes. While some argue that the death penalty is too harsh, others believe it’s necessary to deter such heinous crimes.
