France’s Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, has announced the expulsion of Omar bin Laden, son of slain Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, due to his social media posts advocating terrorism.
The 43-year-old, who has lived in Normandy since 2016, was ordered to leave French territory by the Orne prefect.
Retailleau stated that Omar bin Laden’s 2023 social media posts “advocated terrorism,” prompting the expulsion. “As a result, the prefect of Orne issued an order to leave French territory,” he said. The courts have confirmed the legality of this decision, taken in the interests of national security.
Omar bin Laden, born in Saudi Arabia, left his father at 19 and eventually settled in France. He married British national Jane Felix-Browne, now known as Zaina Mohammed, in 2007. His bid to live in the UK was rejected.
Retailleau has banned Omar bin Laden from returning to France for any reason. The interior minister’s move reflects his vow to bring “order” on immigration and crime, emphasizing that “the rule of law is neither intangible nor sacred.”
This development comes amid France’s rightward shift under new Prime Minister Michel Barnier. Retailleau’s appointment as interior minister signals a tougher stance on security and immigration issues.
