The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has declared the Action Peoples Party (APP) winners of 22 chairmanship seats in the October 5, 2024 local government elections.
Justice Adolphus Enebeli, Chairman of RSIEC, announced the results in Port Harcourt, stating that the candidates secured majority votes in two-thirds of their respective wards in 22 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
– Polls closed at 3 pm with a large voter turnout despite rain.
– Results started trickling in after polls closed.
– Etche LGA chairmanship results were delayed due to its expansive landscape with 19 wards.
– APP candidates emerged victorious in 22 out of 23 LGAs.
Austin Okpara, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, commended the peaceful conduct of the election. “The turnout was good. Those who boycotted did so for selfish reasons… They don’t wish Rivers well,” he said.
Chijioke Ihunwo, APP candidate in Obio/Akpor LGA, praised RSIEC for conducting a credible election. “I describe the election as peaceful, despite attempts by enemies of the state to disrupt RSIEC’s activities.”
– No election held in Wike’s hometown, Rumueprikom, Obio/Akpor LGA.
– Gunmen attacked Ward 19 in Elekahia Primary School, Port Harcourt City LGA.
– Explosions occurred at APC secretariat and Obio/Akpor Local Government secretariat.
The Rivers State Police Command has begun investigating the explosions and has urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.
