In a bold move, former National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Managing Director, George Moghalu, has declared his intention to run for Anambra State governorship in the 2025 elections.
Moghalu, who spoke to journalists at his Nnewi home on Saturday, cited Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s alleged failure to deliver as the primary reason for his decision.
Moghalu emphasized the need for change, stating, “We need to redeem Anambra fast because Soludo has failed the people. There is a dearth of infrastructure in the state, security has collapsed.” He also expressed confidence in his ability to make a difference, saying, “What he could not do in four years, he will never be able to do in eight years. You don’t need eight years to develop Anambra.”
Moghalu revealed that he had resigned from the APC and joined the Labour Party on October 1. “Before I did so, I consulted my wife and children, my followers and friends, and I was convinced that Labour Party is the party that aligns with my person and the best suited platform to realize my ambition.”
The former APC chieftain acknowledged Anambra’s zoning arrangement, noting that Anambra South, his and Soludo’s homeland, is favored for the contest. Moghalu pledged to serve only one term if elected, ensuring Anambra South’s turn is completed before passing the baton to Anambra Central.
On leaving the ruling APC, Moghalu stressed that local politics takes precedence, stating, “Every politics is local… it would be the decision of Anambra people to vote any party, and not for the Federal Government to choose for the people.” This move marks a significant shift in Anambra’s political landscape, as Moghalu joins other contenders like Barth Nwibe, who has also declared his intention to run under the Labour Party.
