Pastor Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has addressed the controversy surrounding his recent comments on tithing.
During the October Holy Ghost Service at Redemption City, Ogun State, Adeboye refuted claims that he advised Christians to stop paying tithes.
Adeboye acknowledged apologizing for any previous statements that may have been misunderstood, but expressed surprise at the rapid spread of false reports online. “The issue of tithing became contentious, and I decided to apologise for anything I might have said wrong. Yet, within an hour, it was being circulated online that I said Christians should stop paying tithes.”
Adeboye emphasized his original message, encouraging believers to give more than the traditional 10%. He shared an inspiring story from Kenneth Hagin’s church, where a man’s finances improved after committing to tithe 90% of his income. Adeboye stated, “Today, I’m close to giving 90%, but I am far from 10%. So, I said it is wrong to limit yourself to 10% when God can take you to a higher percentage.”
Adeboye reiterated that 10% should be the minimum for beginners, urging believers to increase their giving as they grow in their faith. “As you grow in the Lord, you should grow in praising Him, winning souls, and in giving… Begin to increase what you give.”
Adeboye’s clarification provides much-needed context amidst the misinformation spreading online. His emphasis on generous giving and spiritual growth resonates with RCCG members and the broader Christian community.
