The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has raised concerns that Nigerian universities are on the brink of collapse due to exorbitant electricity bills.
At a two-day national conference in Abuja, ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke revealed that some universities face monthly electricity bills of N200m to N300m.
Osodeke criticized the federal government’s allocation of N15m monthly for running costs, including electricity, citing a stark contrast with the N21m monthly allowance for each Senator.
“What the government gives you to run the system is N15 million, and you get a bill for electricity alone of N300 million. Where is that money coming from?” Osodeke asked.
He emphasized the need to reassess national priorities, stating, “A government that will give just N15 million for UNILAG to run, will in turn, give one Senator N21 million a month.” ASUU urges the government to address the funding crisis to prevent university collapse.
