In a bizarre incident, 30-year-old Abdullahi Mohammed climbed a 33kv high tension electricity pole in Mayo-Belwa last Friday, demanding President Bola Tinubu’s resignation before descending.
The Adamawa Police Command intervened, rescuing and arresting Mohammed on Saturday night.
According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Suleiman Nguroje, Mohammed’s actions were deemed suicidal, and attempting suicide is a criminal offense under Nigerian laws ¹. Nguroje revealed that hard drugs, including Indian hemp, were found on Mohammed, who confessed to consuming them. This led to his admission at the Yola Psychiatric hospital for mental examination.
Nguroje stated, “When the police from the Moyo-Belwa division rescued Abdullahi Mohammed… some hard drugs were discovered on him… He was behaving abnormal, so we had to take him to the psychiatric hospital for a detailed medical examination.” The police are awaiting medical results before taking further action.
Nguruje emphasized the police’s constitutional duty to protect lives and property, stressing that individuals attempting to take their own lives will face the full wrath of the law. Mohammed, from Gashaka town in Taraba State, will likely face charges for attempting suicide.
This incident highlights concerns about mental health and substance abuse. The Adamawa Police Command’s actions demonstrate a commitment to addressing these issues while upholding the law.
