The #FearlessInOctober protests witnessed a low turnout across the country on Tuesday, with heavy security presence observed in various states.
The protests, organized by the Take It Back Movement, aimed to address economic hardship, insecurity, and other pressing national issues.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of a 30-day National Youth Conference has been met with criticism from opposition parties and some youth groups. The conference aims to address challenges facing Nigerian youth, who constitute over 60% of the population.
Juwon Sanyaolu, National Coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, described the conference as a “jamboree” designed to reward the President’s supporters. Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, defended the initiative, stating that it would provide a platform for young people to develop solutions to national challenges.
In Abuja, police officers dispersed protesters with tear gas, while the FCT police command denied attacking the protesters. In Lagos, protesters gathered at Ikeja Underbridge, monitored by a large contingent of security personnel.
The Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, and Coalition for United Political Parties criticized the President’s decision, describing it as a misallocation of priorities. The All Progressives Congress and some youth groups commended the planned conference.
At least 20 states, including all five in the eastern region, shunned the protest. Youths in Adamawa and Nasarawa staged solidarity walks in support of President Tinubu.
