The Federal Government has commenced payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage to over 1.2 million civil servants across all levels of the federal civil service.
The Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein, signed a warrant directing the commencement of the new payment. This development follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the new minimum wage into law on July 29.

Organised Labour has commended the government’s move, urging other entities to follow suit. However, some civil servants and pensioners have expressed dissatisfaction with the increase, citing economic hardships.
The organised private sector has raised concerns about the threat of imprisonment for non-compliance, arguing that smaller businesses may struggle to pay the new wage.
The government’s new wage bill is estimated at N4.019 trillion annually.
