Raphael Varane, a stalwart defender and France’s 2018 World Cup winner, has announced his retirement from football at 31.
Varane’s illustrious career spanned 14 years, with successes at Real Madrid and Manchester United. He won four Champions League titles and lifted the World Cup trophy with France.
On social media, Varane shared: “A new life begins off the pitch.” He also revealed plans to remain involved with Italian club Como, where he had signed for the current season.
“I will remain with Como. Just without using my boots and shin pads. Something I am looking forward to sharing more about soon,” Varane hinted at a new role within the club.
Varane’s decision comes after a knee injury in August excluded him from Como’s Serie A squad. Despite his short stint, Varane’s experience and expertise will likely benefit Como off the pitch.
Varane’s retirement marks the end of an era for French football. His achievements serve as inspiration for aspiring players.
