The Federal Government has announced that the payment of the new minimum wage will commence in July 2024, contrary to earlier promises of May 1, 2024.
Ekpo Nta, Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), made this known at a press briefing in Abuja.
Nta explained that the President approved the bill on July 29, 2024, after the National Assembly passed it. This date will serve as the effective implementation date for the new minimum wage.
Benson Upah, Head of Information of the Nigerian Labour Congress, described the decision as “unfair” and “unacceptable.” Timmy Etim, National Vice President of the Trade Union Congress, also criticized the government’s move, citing the Minister of State for Labour’s earlier promise of a May implementation.
The NSIWC has approved revised templates for various salary structures, including:
– _Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure_
– _Consolidated Universities Academic Salary Structure_
– _Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure II_

– _Consolidated Medical Salary Structure_
– _Consolidated Health Salary Structure_

The NSIWC will issue further directives on how pensioners, NYSC members, and interns will benefit from the implementation. Federal public services are advised to contact the NSIWC for clarification on the new salary structures.
