The United States has launched a major relief effort to support thousands affected by the devastating floods in Maiduguri and Borno State.
The severe flooding, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam, resulted in loss of life, widespread destruction, and displacement.
US Embassy’s Statement
“The United States is deeply saddened by the devastating floods… We extend our condolences to the victims, their families, and all those impacted,” said the US Embassy in Abuja.
The US Agency for International Development (USAID) is working with UN agencies and partners to provide emergency aid. Over 67,000 people have received hot meals, while pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children under five receive nutritional aid.
USAID is backing the United Nations Humanitarian Air Service to deliver food to inaccessible areas and engaging NGOs to provide immediate relief to flood-stricken communities.
The US praised the resilience of the local population and the tireless work of first responders and aid workers, saying, “Our thoughts remain with the people of Borno during this challenging time.”
