Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has confidently declared that the electorate doesn’t need Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike’s influence to choose the right candidate in the upcoming governorship election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Obaseki emphasized that Edo people are wise and capable of making their own decisions.
Obaseki’s statement comes after Wike announced that he wouldn’t support the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, due to his fallout with Obaseki. Despite this, Obaseki remains optimistic that his party will emerge victorious.
“He came to get Edo people to vote for me, right? Wow! Edo people are not that dumb. They know who to vote for.” Obaseki stated, adding that Edo people don’t require outsiders to make decisions for them. “Edo people will make decisions this time because they know what they want.”
Obaseki’s rift with Wike and other political associates won’t hinder the PDP’s chances, according to the governor. He attributed the dissatisfaction of some politicians to his use of government revenues to address the needs of the people.
Obaseki described the Edo governorship poll as a critical contest, warning that an All Progressives Congress (APC) victory would spell doom for the state. “It’s a do-or-die affair because if they do, we die. The level of impunity, the level of recklessness we see in the opposition party, if they take over Edo State, it is the end.”
With tensions running high, the Edo governorship election promises to be a thrilling contest. Will Obaseki’s confidence in the electorate’s wisdom pay off, or will external influences shape the outcome? The people of Edo State will decide on Saturday.
