The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum has reaffirmed its support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the leader of the party in Rivers State, despite opposition from former Governor Nyesom Wike.
Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, had warned the governors to stay out of Rivers State’s affairs, threatening to retaliate in their respective states if they continued to back Fubara.
Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, maintained that the decision to recognize Fubara’s leadership is irreversible. “The decision is in order and that is how it is supposed to be. Governor Fubara is the leader of the party in the state,” Mohammed stated, emphasizing that Fubara’s position as the number one PDP member in Rivers State warrants control over the party’s structure.
Mohammed also acknowledged the mentor-mentee relationship between Wike and Fubara, expressing hopes for reconciliation. “We are working behind the scenes to ensure they come together to work together in a manner that PDP is known for,” he said.
However, recent developments suggest that Wike has gained the upper hand in the leadership dispute, with the National Working Committee (NWC) endorsing the Rivers State congresses ¹. The NWC’s decision has delayed the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting until October 24, potentially allowing Wike to consolidate his position.
The ongoing power struggle between Wike and Fubara has sparked concerns about the party’s unity and prospects in future elections. As the situation unfolds, Nigerians will be watching closely to see how the PDP navigates this internal conflict.
