In a move to strengthen the Labour Party, presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged members of the dissolved National Working Committee (NWC), led by Julius Abure, to join forces with the National Caretaker Committee.
Obi’s representative, Datti Baba-Ahmed, conveyed this message at the committee’s inaugural meeting in Abuja.
Obi emphasized that Abure’s tenure ended constitutionally, not through external forces. “Listen, my friend, no governor unseated Abure, the constitution unseated him. Abure’s time elapsed. Nobody unseated him. As of today, Abure is our good friend and a loyal member. We want him back in the fold; we have roles for him to play.”
He highlighted the party’s achievements, citing their bold move to the Supreme Court, claiming 10 million votes, and receiving six million. “We are a political party who went all the way to the Supreme Court… So we are a force to contend with in Africa. What we’ve done has never been done before.”
Obi expressed confidence in the party’s future, aiming to secure a majority in the National Assembly and win the presidency in 2027.
Senator Nenadi Usman, Chairman of the Labour Party National Caretaker Committee, assured party members of the committee’s commitment to rebuilding and restoring the party. “We are on a rescue mission, not just for the Labour Party, but for our dear nation, Nigeria… Our party will become a platform for all disenfranchised and unhappy Nigerians.”
This development comes after Abure announced that the party’s presidential ticket for 2027 is open to all, not reserved for Obi ². As the Labour Party navigates its internal dynamics, Nigerians watch with interest, eager to see how the party will shape the country’s political landscape.
