The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its decision to increase boarding fees in its model colleges, citing the need to provide better welfare for students.
According to Mr. Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the current N35,000 boarding fee, which has remained unchanged since 2021, is no longer realistic in 2024.
*New Fee Structure*
The government approved a new boarding fee of N100,000 for the 2024/2025 session, which commenced on September 15, 2024. This decision was made to ensure the students receive quality care and services.
*Government’s Rationale*
Lawal emphasized that the ministry understands some parents may disagree with the fee increase, but stressed that the welfare of children is the top priority. “The Ministry is aware of dissenting views by some parents to the inevitable increase in boarding fees in our model colleges. This was not an easy decision, but the welfare of the children is a priority for the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Lagos State Government.”
*Fee Payment and Utilization*
Lawal explained that boarding fees are paid per term and cover essential costs such as feeding, janitorial services, and other miscellaneous expenses related to hostel maintenance. He noted that enrollment in a boarding school is an individual choice for parents, who are expected to bear the associated costs.
*Previous Reviews*
This is not the first time the Lagos State Government has reviewed boarding fees. In 2021, the government increased fees from N25,000 to N50,000 per term, citing economic realities and the need to maintain quality education ¹.
