The Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, has dismissed Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike’s claim that he won’t support him in the September 21 election.
Ighodalo, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today, emphasized that the outcome of the election will be determined by the Edo people, not Wike or any other political figure.
Wike had earlier stated that he told Governor Godwin Obaseki and Ighodalo that he wouldn’t support the PDP candidate, citing past experiences where his supported candidates didn’t deliver. However, Ighodalo countered that Wike’s account of their meeting was inaccurate.
“Sometimes when gentlemen talk in some kind of privacy or arrangements, we don’t voice out what has been said. But it is not correct that (former) Governor Wike said he wasn’t going to support us. That’s incorrect,” Ighodalo said.
Ighodalo emphasized his commitment to fair governance and the betterment of Edo State, highlighting that his conversation with Wike centered around these issues. “Whether you are a governor or a minister, it is only Edo citizens and residents who have their PVCs who can take that decision with the support of God Almighty. I fear no man, I only fear God.”
Confident of his party’s chances, Ighodalo vowed to concede defeat and congratulate the winner if they lose fairly. “Honestly, if we lose this election and we know we’ve lost it fairly and squarely, I will be the first to concede. But I know we can’t lose this election if there is a level playing field for everybody.”
As the Edo governorship election draws near, Ighodalo has been advocating for strong community relationships and unity, stressing the importance of collaboration in navigating the state’s challenges ¹. With his focus on fair governance and people-centric policies, Ighodalo remains optimistic about his chances.
