Born in Ibadan, Oyo State, Akande earned his LLB from Obafemi Awolowo University and has over 25 years of legal experience.

Akande was elected to the UN International Law Commission in 2021 and has served as counsel in various international cases before the ICJ, International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, and International Criminal Court.
