Renowned disc jockey, DJ Neptune, has addressed the recent controversy surrounding unpaid royalties for his 2020 collaboration with singer and Big Brother Naija winner, Laycon, on the remix of “Nobody Icons.”
In an exclusive interview on the “Zero Conditions” podcast, DJ Neptune vehemently denied defrauding Laycon, emphasizing that the issue lies in documentation and return on investment. “Laycon is my brother regardless. Let me just establish here that nobody ate anybody’s money,” he clarified.
DJ Neptune explained that the song’s distribution deal involves advanced marketing money, which requires recoupment. “When you’ve a deal with a distro company or a label and you’re being given advanced marketing money to push the music, the video or whatnot. They’ve to recoup. It’s a return on investment.”
He revealed that Laycon’s team was proposed a certain percentage, but they rejected it, leading to stalled conversations between their lawyers. “I’m not a legal personnel. I’m a creative. I have to perform and take care of my family. So I’ve put this in the hands of people that will handle it.”
DJ Neptune expressed disappointment in Laycon’s public call-out, feeling it misrepresented the situation. “I guess, maybe my own fault was not going back to find out what was going on. But I didn’t defraud him.”
The DJ assured that he has referred the matter to his legal team and is committed to resolving the dispute amicably.
