The South-West leadership of the Labour Party has called on its members in Ogun State to put aside their differences and unite towards presenting a strong front in the forthcoming November 16 local government elections.
The party’s leadership made the call during a meeting held in Abeokuta, where they emphasized the need for unity in order to emerge victorious in the elections.
According to the Publicity Secretary of the Ogun LP, the meeting was convened to reconcile some internal challenges within the party and strengthen it ahead of the elections. He said, “The Ogun State Labour Party, rising from its leadership meeting aimed at reconciling some teething challenges within the party and strengthening the party ahead of the forthcoming local government election in the state, has urged all stakeholders and interest groups in the party to close ranks and form a common front towards successful prosecution of the forthcoming local government elections in the state.”
The party’s leadership noted that the ruling All Progressives Congress had failed to improve the lives of citizens, leaving Nigerians and Ogun State residents impoverished, pauperized, despondent, and disillusioned. “The party observed that there is no gainsaying the fact that the APC government, at both the national and state level, have woefully failed to improve the life of the citizens and that Nigerians, and indeed the people of Ogun State are yearning for a change,” the statement said.
The Labour Party sees itself as the only credible alternative that will provide inspiring leadership and good governance to the people at the grassroots. To participate in the local government elections, aspirants under the party must fulfill certain criteria, including writing a letter of expression of interest, obtaining and submitting a nomination form within the specified period, possessing a minimum of Senior Secondary School Certificate, attaining 30 years of age, and making payment of the prescribed nomination fee, among others.
The party’s call for unity is seen as a strategic move to present a formidable force in the elections and capitalize on the perceived failures of the APC government. With the elections drawing near, the Labour Party’s ability to unite and present a strong front will be crucial in determining its chances of success.
