The Edo State Government has announced an indefinite postponement of the resumption of all schools in the state, citing the recent hike in fuel price as the reason.
The announcement was made in a memo signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Ojo Akin-Longe, in Benin on Saturday.
According to the memo, the resumption of schools, which was initially scheduled for September 9, has been put on hold until further notice. The government attributed the decision to the tension arising from the fuel price increase and the challenges faced by parents and guardians.
The memo read: “The Edo State Government hereby announces the postponement of the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo State, originally scheduled for Monday, 9th September 2024, until further notice.”
The government has urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to closely monitor the activities of their children and wards, given the current situation and the rising tension caused by the fuel price hike.
The postponement of school resumption is seen as a measure to ensure the safety and well-being of students, parents, and teachers, as the fuel price hike has led to increased transportation costs and economic hardship. The government has promised to provide an update on the resumption date once the situation improves.
