President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has attributed the recent increase in the pump price of petrol in Nigeria to the tough decisions taken by his administration.
Speaking to Nigerians living and doing business in China on Friday in Beijing, Tinubu said, “For example, you might have been hearing from home in the last few days about fuel prices. But, can we help it?” He explained that the price hike is necessary for the development of basic amenities in Nigeria.
The President cited the example of good roads, constant electricity supply, water supply, and good schools, which are readily available in China, but lacking in Nigeria. He emphasized that these amenities can only be achieved through sacrifices from citizens.
Tinubu, who concluded his official activities in China on Friday, described his visit as “very good and successful.” He noted that Nigerians can enjoy the same level of development as China if they are willing to make sacrifices. The President’s comments come as Nigerians continue to grapple with the economic implications of the fuel price hike, which has seen petrol prices rise to between N897 and N1000 per litre.
