Nigerian singer Shallipopi has shared his thoughts on the ongoing debate over the high fees charged by local artistes, advising his colleagues to charge according to their values.
In an interview with News Central TV, Shallipopi noted that an artiste’s value is directly linked to the success and reach of their music. He disputed the notion that Nigerian artists have overpriced themselves out of the local market, instead emphasizing that artistes who achieve similar streaming numbers as American artistes should charge comparable fees.
“It depends on your music and where it has gotten, that is what your price is going to be,” Shallipopi stated. “If your music has gotten the same stream as an American artiste, you should be charging the same way they charge but if it’s not up to that you cannot overcharge,” he added.
Shallipopi’s comments come as many have criticized Nigerian artistes for charging exorbitant fees for performances and collaborations. However, the singer argues that artistes should be compensated fairly based on their level of success and the demand for their music.
By advocating for value-based charges, Shallipopi hopes to promote a more equitable and sustainable music industry in Nigeria, where artistes are paid according to their worth and contributions to the sector.
