Prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have dismissed threats by former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, to “put fire in states” of PDP governors who support Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Wike’s comments were seen as an attempt to assert control over the party’s structure in Rivers State.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, described Wike’s comments as “personal opinions” that pose no threat to the party. “No single individual has the capacity to terminate the life of this party, PDP,” he said.
Oladele Olabamiji, Osun State PDP Director of Media and Publicity, urged Wike to face his duties as a minister and stop threatening those supporting Fubara. “Wike’s statement is reckless and irresponsible,” he said.
Sydney Gbara, Rivers State Commissioner for Environment, called on security agencies to invite Wike for questioning, stating that his comments were tantamount to causing a crisis in the country.
Supporters of Governor Fubara remain calm, with Commissioner Gbara saying, “We respect his demeanour and we are proud of him that he’s been able to maintain his cool and calm nature.”
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, is currently abroad and will respond to Wike’s comments at an appropriate time.
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State expressed hope that the crisis rocking the party will be resolved soon, stating, “This party will not go down. No democracy without opposition.”
