In a bid to combat the cholera outbreak in Ikorodu division of Lagos State, local government and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) chairmen have launched a sensitization campaign among residents.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, recently warned that the state had recorded many cases of severe gastroenteritis (cholera) in communities around Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe Local Government Areas.
Wasiu Adesina, Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government Area, advised residents to take preventive measures seriously, including boiling drinking water, maintaining proper sanitation, and safely disposing of faeces. “If all these measures are strictly obeyed, cholera outbreak will be curtailed in Ikorodu and Lagos State as a whole,” he said.
Sesan Daini, Chairman of Igbogbo-Baiyeku LCDA, warned residents against open defecation, emphasizing the need for personal hygiene and food safety. “Residents found engaging in open defecation will be made to face the law,” he said.
Kazeem Sulaimon, Chairman of Ikorodu West LCDA, advocated for extensive sensitization in markets, abattoirs, and every nook and cranny of Ikorodu to enlighten people about cholera prevention.
The chairmen’s efforts demonstrate a united front against the cholera outbreak, emphasizing the importance of resident participation in preventing the spread of the disease.
