A Federal High Court in Abuja has summoned the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Head of the Legal Services Department to appear before it on September 2, with specific documents related to the money laundering case against Binance Holdings Limited and its executives.
The court has brought forward the trial date by a month, from October 11 to September 2, following a request by the defense counsel. Binance USA’s Head of Financial Crime Compliance, Tigan Gambaryan, and the exchange’s British-Kenyan regional manager for Africa, Nadeem Anjarwalla, are facing charges of money laundering to the tune of $35m.
The court has requested the CBN Governor and Legal Head to produce certified true copies of excel spreadsheets related to exchange rate results published on the CBN website between June 1 and August 16, 2024.
The court issued a Subpoena Duces Tecum, commanding the CBN officials to appear before it or delegate someone to do so. Failure to comply may result in legal consequences.
Gambaryan and Anjarwalla were initially detained in the custody of the Office of the National Security Adviser. Anjarwalla fled lawful custody on March 22, 2024, while Gambaryan was moved to EFCC custody and later to Kuje Correctional Facility, where he is currently detained.
