Mpox is a rare viral zoonotic infectious disease caused by the Mpox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus. Following the eradication of smallpox, Mpox has emerged as the most significant Orthopox virus. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared Mpox a public health emergency of continental security on August 13, 2024.
The NCDC’s National Mpox multi-sectoral and multi-partner Emergency Operation Centre continues to coordinate the response to the outbreak in Nigeria. The centre is working to contain the spread of the disease and ensure public safety.
