Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Gombe State University branch, to suspend its planned strike action.
The governor made this plea on Thursday when he received a delegation from the ASUU National Executive Council visitation panel to Gombe State University at the Government House.
The government has promised to meet the demands of the union, including the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, with a sum of N947,669,909.13 million by Monday. According to the governor, the State Executive Council will meet on Monday to approve the payment, and the union’s demands will be given expedited attention.
The union is demanding the payment of Earned Academic Allowance, excess workload, responsibility allowances, postgraduates study grant, and outstanding promotion arrears for 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The governor urged the union to be patient and not embark on strike action, assuring that the government will meet its demands.
Professor Daniel Gongula, who led the NEC visitation panel, commended the governor for prioritizing education but emphasized the need for the government to fulfill its promises within the specified timeline. Gongula stated that the union will submit its report to ASUU principal officers and needs to be convinced that the government will meet its demands.
