The Akwa Ibom State Police Command is mourning the loss of its Commissioner, Waheed Ayilara, who passed away on Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.
Ayilara’s death occurred hours after he underwent prostate cancer surgery on Wednesday.
The family expressed their sadness, stating, “We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead”.
Ayilara’s policing career was marked by notable appointments, including his unveiling as the acting Commissioner of Police in Lagos in November 2023. He succeeded AIG Idowu Owohunwa and was later deployed to head the Akwa Ibom State Command in February 2024 by the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
A top police officer in Akwa Ibom State confirmed Ayilara’s death, speaking on condition of anonymity. However, efforts to verify the information with the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful.
