In a significant political shift ahead of the November 16 governorship election in Ondo State, a group of All Progressives Congress (APC) members has defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The defectors, led by Femi Ikoyi, cited unfair treatment in the APC as the reason for their exit. They surrendered their APC membership cards and received SDP cards at a rally held at the party’s secretariat in Akure.
Ikoyi, leader of the defectors, revealed that they were a strong force in Ondo APC known as the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM). He expressed confidence that more APC and PDP members would join SDP to ensure victory for its candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye.
Gbenga Akinbunmi, Chairman of Ondo SDP, assured the defectors of equal treatment in the party. The state SDP governorship candidate, Otunba Bamidele Akingboye, congratulated the defectors and promised inclusive governance if elected.
This mass defection is seen as a significant blow to the APC in Ondo State, potentially altering the political landscape ahead of the governorship election. The SDP, now bolstered by the new members, aims to capitalize on this momentum to secure victory.
